He had a cancer in his leg which forced him to be an amputee. In an effort to get to know each other they share their favorite books. Hazel's was An Imperial Affliction and Gus's was a video game spoof book. They start hanging out more and one day Hazel's cancer got worse, she was in the hospital and right before that Gus was in the hospital, his cancer that was gone for 2 years had come back, majorly. He does not tell Hazel that and the two journey via the make a wish foundation to Amsterdam to meet the author of An Imperial Affliction. They learn that this guy was a rotten man and Hazel's author that she looked up to got her so angry. A few months later Augustus Waters dies. Hazel, Isaac and Gus went through his eulogy before he actually died. She does not actually stick to that when she speaks in the funeral. After this she finds out that Gus and the author had been talking. The movie ends with her reading the note, going to her back yard dressed nicely hugging the note and we are left wondering what happened.
My Thoughts:
I think that this book was extremely close in adaption to it was in the actual book. The book was one of my favorites when I read it and now seeing it in person was an awesome thing. It was everything I expected and more. They actually wrote what the text messages between them said in a nice font with a good border every time it came up. It was nice being able to see them on screen. They portrayed everything in a beautiful way. Cinematically each shot and part of the movie was to me absolutely perfect. It makes you cry and laugh and sometimes both at once.
